Eight Held For Alleged Involvement In Militant Activities Since 2016 - Melaka Police

MELAKA, Feb 21 (Bernama) -- Eight individuals who are living in the state have been detained on suspicion of involvement in militant activities since the setting up of the state counter-terrorism unit in May 2016 until today.

Melaka police chief Datuk Abdul Jalil Hassan said the latest arrests involved two men, a local and a foreigner, in December last year and in January respectively on suspicion of planning the attack on entertainment centres in the capital and Bukit Aman police headquarters.

"The arrests show a very serious indicator and require continuous monitoring in an effort to prevent the spread of extremism ideology.

"The number of supporters of the Jemaah Islamiah detained within 10 years is only about 300 people, but the situation is increasingly alarming as more than 300 supporters have been detained in the past four years," he said in his speech at the Melaka police contingent headquarters monthly assembly here today.
