Islamic State fighters
are shifting their focus from the Middle East and are now looking to wage war
at home, according to a leading expert in terrorism. “It’s a guerrilla
strategy using components from outside the heartland of the Middle East,”
Sidney Jones, terrorism expert in South East Asia said.
.
.
“ISIS has said
basically now that it’s difficult to get to Syria, wage war at home.”
While the fight to
wipe out extremists in Syria and Iraq is progressing, many Islamic State
recruits are now relocating to Australia’s backyard in South East Asia. The resurgence of ISIS
on Australia’s doorstep is considered such a threat that Australian soldiers
have been deployed to the jungles of the Philippines to make sure ISIS is
stopped in its tracks.
.
More than 100
Australian troops from the army, air force and navy are currently part of the
training mission designed to train the Filipino military in battle techniques
against ISIS. “It may not be in
Australia, but this part of the world is in our backyard,” Young told 60
Minutes reporter Liam Bartlett.
“They’re [Philippines]
our neighbours. Their prosperity, their peace, is ours.”
.
.
Offering lessons they
learnt in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, Australian troops are preparing local
forces for urban combat situations – not dissimilar to the Marawi City siege of
2017.
.
Marawi City was home
to more than 200,000 people before it was transformed into Islamic State’s
battleground, destroying every building and structure in the city.
.
.
Despite the Marawi
siege ending in November 2017, the city is still uninhabitable with hundreds of
unexploded bombs hidden beneath the rubble.
