[PART 2] ISIS’ NEW STRATEGY TO ‘WAGE WAR AT HOME’, EXPERT SAYS

More than 60,000 people have been left homeless after the siege, forced into makeshift camps on the outskirts of the city.

But expert Sidney Jones fears the problem of extremists in the Philippines is far from over.
“I think everybody sees the failure to reconstruct Marawi as being a real danger point because it’s fertile ground for recruitment,” Jones told Bartlett.
Islamic State’s failure to take over Marawi city has seen a return to a deadly strategy - suicide bombing attacks.

“I think we have to be worried about the potential for a violent attack in Manila. There’s a bigger chance of a bomb attack in Manila than there is of another takeover of a city.”
The destruction of Marawi city – and the impending fear of more extremist attacks – has seen local and international military determined to work together to eradicate ISIS from the region.

“They want them gone,” Captain John Young told Liam Bartlett.
“They are intent on making sure that groups like ISIS don’t hold their foothold and don’t get back on top again.”
