PART 4.1 – (continue:) Rabitatul Mujahidin as Cross Border Terrorist Network

Some of the attacks recorded in correlation with Rabitatul Mujahidin meetings and command from top JI leaders such as Christmas Eve bombings in 11 cities in Indonesia (December 2000), Bombing of Santa Ana Church in Medan (July 2001), Bali Bombing I (October 2002), Series of bombings in Zamboanga and Kidapawan in Philippines (October 2002), Dr. Joe Fernandez killed (November 2002), Car bomb in Cotabato Airport (February 2003) and bombing at Davao Airport in Philippines (March 2003), Bombing of JW Marriott Hotel ( August 2003) and Bali Bombing II (October 2005) in Indonesia. All of these activities involved crossing the borders as it does not exist for Southeast Asia Muslims. For militants, the aim is to found a caliphate for the Muslims (borderless kingdom).

Contact with Muslim groups in Rabitatul Mujahidin was established by Hambali as approved by JI’s top position. Hambali created contact through his Afghan-alumnus network and at some stage through his personal contacts. This kind of arrangement was carried out by Hambali and the top leaders as requested by Tanzim Sirri (secret movement). Not all of the JI members knew about the Rabitatul Mujahidin meetings. Most of them were not informed about nor invited to the meeting. As ordinary members, they had to obey all commands from leaders without question. As agreed in the Bai’ah (personal agreement), followers were not to question any command or direction that came from JI leaders and the obedience to the ustazs was paramount.
