400 MNLF MEN HELP MILITARY IN RESCUE OF SAYYAF HOSTAGES

ZAMBOANGA CITY: Some 400 former armed members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) have been deployed to several forested areas of Sulu to help military personnel rescue domestic and foreign hostages still being held captive by Abu Sayyaf bandits, a top MNLF field leader has revealed.
.
New MNLF chief Hadji Yusop Jikiri, on supposed instruction from MNLF founding chairman Nur Misuari — who had been earlier befriended by President Rodrigo Duterte — disclosed that he has “tasked 15 of his faithful ground commanders to deploy at least 400 ex-combatants to the island province to conduct the rescue operations.”

.

From his MNLF main camp at Sitio Pasil in Indanan town, Jikiri directed his 15 MNLF field leaders to directly report to him any necessary development “on their effort to locate and liberate the hostages from the hands of the Basilan-based terrorists.”

.
He said, “[W]hat we want now is to locate the whereabouts of the hostages and to carefully work for their immediate freedom” even as he also ordered the deployed MNLF fighters to regularly conduct monitoring and surveillance activities.
.
Jiri noted the Abu Sayyaf terrorists “have splintered into smaller groups and are now highly mobile, making it difficult for military forces to pinpoint their exact whereabouts.”

The new MNLF chief gave assurances that the number of MNLF men deployed to the entire Tausug-populated province “is enough to help government forces in the search and rescue operations.”
.
He said, “our combatants are familiar with Sulu’s terrain and that is an advantage for us.”
