[NEWS] FADLI ZON QUESTIONED THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE GOVERNMENT TO PREVENT THE HOSTAGE OF INDONESIAN CITIZENS BY THE ABU SAYYAF

JAKARTA - Member of the House of Representatives Commission I Fadli Zon questioned the government's seriousness in preventing the hostage of Indonesian citizens (WNI) by Abu Sayyaf militant groups in the Philippines. This was conveyed by Fadli, responding to three fishermen from Baubau and Wakatobi who were held hostage by the Abu Sayyaf group in Tambisan waters in the state of Sabah, Malaysia.
.
"We are very concerned, why does this hostage incident continue to repeat. Why is there no preventive effort from the government, in this case, to prevent our citizens from being in those waters, or our flagged vessels are in those waters," said Fadli in the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday (3/12/2019).
.
Fadli said, the government should take preventive measures such as discussions with local authorities who could communicate with the Abu Sayyaf group. "So this should not be happening anymore, because finally, it seems like we are entering the same hole. Moreover, this group is oriented to get money," he said.
.
According to Fadli, the negotiator who could communicate with the Abu Sayyaf group was Maj. Gen. (ret.) Kivlan Zen. He said, Kivlan Zen had served in the Philippines and had experience communicating with the group. "Pak Kivlan Zen was able to take part in the abduction of several Abu Sayyaf kidnappings because Pak Kivlan Zen had served there as an observer in peace between the MNLF and the University of the Philippines," he said. Meanwhile, Deputy Foreign Minister Mahendra Siregar said the government prioritized the safety of three Indonesian citizens held hostage by the Abu Sayyaf group.
.
He said the government was still coordinating with the Philippine government to free the three Indonesian citizens. "And in this connection, the employer expects to be able to do the best things to ensure the release of the hostage," Mahendra said. Previously reported, three Indonesian citizens (WNI), who worked as ABK on fishing vessels in Malaysia, were kidnapped and held hostage by the Abu Sayyaf group in the Philippines while searching for fish in the waters of Lahad Datu, Malaysia.
