COTABATO CITY, Philippines — A senior leader of the Abu Sayyaf bandit group surrendered to authorities in Parang, Sulu on Saturday.
The surrender of Mawallil Saiyadi was facilitated by Mayor Alkhadar Loong of Parang; Maj. Nicanor Lambino, chief of the municipal police, and officials of the Army’s 100th Infantry Battalion.
Saiyadi brought with him two assault rifles, one of which was fitted with a 40-millimeter grenade launcher.
Officials from the Army’s 1102 Brigade as well as from the Sulu provincial police witnessed Saiyadi’s surrender in a ceremony at the municipal hall.
Local officials said Saiyadi led several encounters with the military in the past five years.
The municipal government will help provide rehabilitation support needed in reintroducing Saiyadi into mainstream society.
