KUALA LUMPUR: A large number of Malaysians have died
fighting the war in Syria.
.
Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu said that the youths, who
died from bombings by coalition forces, were terrorists who fought for a lost
cause.
.
Without divulging the numbers, he said that there were
numerous Malaysians who had died fighting in the war in Syria.
.
The New Straits Times reliably learnt that hundreds of
Malaysian youths were recruited by the Islamic State’s (IS) Daesh terror group
to fight in Syria as militants, with 37 deaths reported.
.
They are believed to have been influenced by IS’
powerful propaganda to fight for an Islamic Caliphate for the true practice of
Islam.
.
In December last year, Inspector-General of Police Tan
Sri Fuzi Harun revealed that 102 Malaysian IS suspects, who had gone to Syria
in 2013, had been stranded after being trapped in the Deir Ez Zour and Al
Bukamal districts there.
.
Of the number, 37 including their mastermind recruiters
like Muhammad Wanndy and Zainuri Kamaruddin, were killed.
.
Dozens of others are believed to have fled to refugee
camps or have been captured by rebel forces and imprisoned.
.
The police’s Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division
has so far identified 54 of the Malaysians - 23 men, 11 women, 12 boys and
eight girls.
.
A total of 105 IS militants, including 52 Malaysians,
were reportedly arrested in the country in 2017, as compared with 119 the
previous year.
.
The police also thwarted 19 terror plots in Malaysia
between 2012 and 2017.
